CHAPTER 8

File and Directory Protection

Server Protection

With DOS-NET, you can protect information by either not sharing the drive that contains the information, or limiting users to a directory. For these basic protection features, you do not require the PROTECT.COM program.

The PROTECT.COM program is responsible for network access rights and file and directory protection. Normally, on small networks or user groups, access rights are not a major concern.

If you require server protection, the PROTECT.COM program must be loaded on the server machine. The PROTECT.COM program provides the following services:

Access rights protection.

Forbid access to file or directory.

File or directory read protection.

File or directory write protection.

Before any of these services are available you must firstly load the PROTECT.COM program on the server machine. It should also be loaded prior to any of your hardware drivers. This way, no other users can access the server machine until the PROTECT.COM program has actually loaded.

Access rights protection

Access rights may be specified when a drive is shared on the server by using the NET SHARE command. To implement these access rights, simply load the PROTECT.COM program.

Forbid access

This feature forbids users access to files or directories. To do so, you must specify the complete path of the files and directories in the DOSNET.INI file under the heading of [Protection].

To forbid access to a directory, you must specify the directory name, as follows:

ForbidAccess=C:\LOTUS

To forbid access to a file, you must specify the complete path and filename, as follows:

ForbidAccess=C:\ACCOUNTS\JAN.DAT

You can also use wild cards * and ? to specify a group of files, as follows:

ForbidAccess=C:\*.COM

The ForbidAccess= parameter may be used multiple times in the DOSNET.INI file to forbid access to multiple files and directories.

Read protection

This feature read protects files or directories. To do so, you must specify the complete path of the files and directories in the DOSNET.INI file under the heading of [Protection].

To read protect a directory, you must specify the directory name, as follows:

ReadProtect=C:\EMAIL

To read protect a file you must specify the complete path and filename, as follows:

ReadProtect=C:\EMAIL\JOHN.EML

You can also use wild cards * and ? to specify a group of files, as follows:

ReadProtect=C:\*.DOC

The ReadProtect= parameter may be used multiple times in the DOSNET.INI file to read protect multiple files and directories.

Write protection

This feature write protects files or directories. To do so, you must specify the complete path of the files and directories in the DOSNET.INI file under the heading of [Protection].

To write protect a directory, you must specify the directory name, as follows:

WriteProtect=C:\DOS

To write protect a file you must specify the complete path and filename, as follows:

WriteProtect=C:\COMMAND.COM

You can also use wild cards * and ? to specify a group of files, as follows:

ReadProtect=C:\*.COM

The ReadProtect= parameter may be used multiple times in the DOSNET.INI file to write protect multiple files and directories.

All of the above DOSNET.INI parameters are explained in detail in Chapter 17 "THE DOSNET.INI CONFIGURATION FILE".

The Server Protection Menu

The Server Protection Menu is accessed through the DOS-NET Main Menu using the network pop-up keys. These are normally CTRL+ALT+Right Shift keys. From the DOS-NET Main Menu, select Server Protection.

protectThe server protection menu allows you to selectively enable or disable reads, writes, and creates. You may also disable the CTRL+ALT+DEL boot protection.
