Communicating with other UCL Codec Controllers

As UCL codec controllers work with fixed bit rate codecs, it is important that both ends of a link are set to the same data rate, or, if the link in unidirectional, that the receiver's data rate is at least as high as the senders. If this is not the case, the receiver will start dropping packets, and the quality will degrade.

The minimum packet size can be anything. Small packet sizes may slightly reduce end to end delay, but they will result in slightly increased transmitted data rates (due to higher overheads of packetisation). Small packets will also cause more load to Mbone routers and to routers performing encapsulation of IP over X25. For these reasons a packet size of at least 400 bytes is recommended.
