Subject: Computing the SVD


COMPUTING THE SVD

The paper by G. H. Golub and C. Reinsch: Singular value decomposition
and least squares solutions, Numer. Math., 14:403-420, 1970 is very
famous, cited over 4600 times. The algorithm has been developed
already in 1967, published first in Numerische Mathematik 1970 an
finally 1971 in the Springer Handbook of Automatic Computation, a
first attempt to build a reliable software library for numerical
computations. I always wondered how the collaboration of Gene Golub
and Christian Reinsch was in 1967. I studied the history and found out
that Gene Golub (together with Peter Businger) designed also 1967
independently of Christian Reinsch an algorithm to compute the SVD. It
is interesting to analyze these two algorithms. It turns out that
without shifts the iterations produce the same results, however the
data structure of the programs is different. With shifts, the
algorithm of Golub-Businger fails sometimes while Reinsch's algorithm
is foolproof.

algorithms. Using the ALGOL compiler of Jan van Katwijk
https://github.com/JvanKatwijk/algol-60-compiler we computed and
compared examples of both original ALGOL-programs and we explain why
Gene Golub became a coauthor of Christian Reinsch.

Subject: Using the MOLE Library for Research


We recently were awarded an NSF grant to make our Mimetics Operators
Library Enhance (MOLE) into a Sustainable Software Ecosystem. MOLE is
a high-quality C++ and MATLAB/Octave library that can be used as a
building block to develop highly accurate and computationally
efficient codes to solve partial differential equations using
high-order mimetic operators.

We are very interested in getting feedback about the potential use of
the MOLE library as an Open Source Ecosystem.

We are eager to identify possible users and collaborators.

among the authors of the top three papers. The remaining two finalists

We are delighted to announce the release of GALAHAD 5.0. GALAHAD is
an open-source library of modern Fortran modules designed to solve
smooth optimization problems. In addition to a number of new packages,
Release 5 provides interfaces from the original Fortran to C, Python,
Julia and Matlab. Furthermore, both 32- and 64-bit integers are now
supported. Full online documentation is provided, and installation has
been made easier using Meson, alongside the traditional Makefile
system. GALAHAD allows interfaces to many core exteral sparse-matrix
solvers, including those from HSL, MUMPS, Pardiso, WSMP and Pastix,
although these must be obtained separately; academic users may obtain
a subset of HSL that supports both 32- and 64-bit integers for free,
and this may significantly enhance performance.

Advances in computational solid and fluid mechanics have led to
significant developments in a large variety of fields, including
engineering, physics, and medicine. Computational mechanics offers
design flexibility, sophistication, and experimentation, enabling
engineers to analyse complex design problems and optimisation
solutions efficiently at reduced costs. This Special Edition
illustrates the latest advances in computational solid mechanics,
fluid mechanics, and coupled problems, and their application to
practical engineering problems. This volume contains the scientific
contributions presented at the 5th African Conference on Computational
Mechanics (AfriComp5) which took place in Cape Town, South Africa, 2-4
November 2022. The articles comprise topics from the wide range of
applied mechanics and mathematics including structural mechanics;
fluid mechanics; fluid-structure interaction; biomechanics; damage and
fracture mechanics; multi-scale mechanics; multi-physics; advanced
numerical methods; optimisation and design; and big data and machine
learning. Only original contributions were considered for inclusion.

of solving deterministic and stochastic PDE and ODE, numerical linear
algebra, approximation, and the newly added theme of numerical

This is the first announcement for the 7th Workshop on Stability and
Discretization Issues in Differential Equations (SDIDE 2025) that will
take place at the Department of Mathematics, University of Salerno,
Fisciano (SA), Italy, from the 16th to the 19th of June 2025. The
workshop addresses stability issues for ODEs, DAEs, DDEs, PDEs,
Dynamical Systems, SDEs, and their discretizations as well as various
applications.

We aim at a small scale meeting of at most 40 participants including
about 30 invited speakers, to support intense scientific exchange and
personal contacts. All talks will be given in plenary sessions that
provide ample time for scientific discussions. Our goal is to exchange

Scientific breakthroughs in neuroscience attempt to explain the need
for sleep and the develop- ment of neurodegenerative diseases such as
Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases in terms of fluid dynamics: the
waste created during the day is cleared away as we sleep or it
accumulates. However, a decade of research after the original theory
was posed has revealed that the underlying physical mechanisms are
still not understood and that advanced mathematical tools are
needed. In this project we propose a research program addressing new
fluid dynamics mechanisms; novel numerical analysis for advanced
multi-physics brain simulations; a framework for patient-specific
simulations.

We will exploit reduced order and machine learning methods in addition
to finite element solutions. With successful delivery, aCleanBrain
will establish the main drivers of brain fluid dynamics, provide a
foundation for accurate, efficient and robust algorithms for
multi-physics problems and develop a software framework for advanced
biomechanical brain simulations.

We are looking for candidates with a solid track record contributing
to one (or more) of these aims.

The aCleanBrain project is funded by the ERC advanced grant funding

Many industrial and societal challenges are related to dynamical
systems and processes characterized by a strongly increasing level of
interconnectedness and complexity. This is particularly the case for
systems that involve interaction between many continuous and discrete
elements on multiple timescales. Current analysis and control
approaches, which are based on purely continuous or discrete-time
approximations and on time-scale separation, do not offer stringent
stability and performance guarantees and badly scale with the system
or network size.

The aim of the joint doctorate between KU Leuven (Wim Michiels) and
Universite de Lille (Laurentiu. Hetel) is to contribute to a new
generation of analysis methods with strong mathematical foundations,
that explicitly take timescale coupling into account and can be
translated into scalable design tools. The focus is on the design of
generic analysis and control methodologies, in line with the
transversal paradigm of control theory, yet the developments will be
steered and validated by application cases in electrical systems and
networks.

The methodology is grounded in the input-output viewpoint towards
dynamical systems and networks, the theory of dissipativity, and
recent advances in the domains of network science and hybrid control
systems.
