My question is how can I un-install the 1.2.5 tarball? I've tried make uninstall but that doesn't seem to be supported. Any help would be greatly appreciated. "License" is equally odd, since there can be no license in that case, either. I believe "Copyright" is precisely the correct place since "this image is not copyrighted" is functionally equivalent to "this image is in the public domain." (In fact, the latter literally means "this image is owned by the public/everyone.") That said, I'm still on the fence. I don't think License is especially useful or worthy--if it were a chunk type, I'd vote NO immediately--but I also don't think registering keywords should be the big hairy deal it has become, and on that basis I'd be inclined to vote YES for just about any new keyword that gets proposed. Those two forces are evenly balanced, so I think I just won't vote. As Matthias pointed out, a "License" keyword could have replaced "Copyright", but "Copyright" cannot replace "License". If I were a user of some software whose internal formats I don't know about, and I saw a "Copyright" box, I would only type "Copyright (C) 2005 Cosmin Truta". But if I saw a "License" box, I would probably say more about the terms of conditions regarding the piece of work that I had created. So there is virtually no impact in implementation complexity (things would be indeed different if a chunk would have been proposed instead), but there are higher chances that the PNGs released into the wild will have an extra piece of useful information, such as "Permission to use freely". I agree with Greg that "registering keywords should be the big hairy deal it has become," This proposal is stricter about syntax than any existing text chunk keyword. All the others are simply free-form text, except Creation Time, for which the RFC-1123 date format is suggested but explicitly not required. This proposal, however, demands either the full license text or a reference in a particular format (title and URL). Why insist on any particular format? For example, someone might write a custom license for a bundle of a hundred images, and create a zipfile containing one text file and a hundred PNGs with License chunks refering to the accompanying text file (not a URL). This would be analogous to common practice for source code. The recommendations regarding URLs (about beginning after a newline and not being divided across lines), if they're going to appear anywhere, should apply to all text chunks, not License text chunks in particular. Also, would we be asking PNG encoders to recognize URLs as URLs in order to enforce or encourage adherence to these recommendations? Or would we be asking end users to adhere to the recommendations themselves, without any enforcement from the encoder? Either way, I think we would need to clarify our intention. Maybe it would be enough just to elaborate on this existing recommendation: > Encoders should discourage the creation of single lines of text > longer than 79 characters, in order to facilitate easy reading, + but should not strictly forbid words longer than that (to allow + the inclusion of long URLs, for example). On the issue of Copyright and License being in separate chunks rather than a single chunk, I'm not sure that's really such a problem. It was argued that License is meaningless in the absence of Copyright because only the copyright holder has the authority to grant a license, but I have a hard time imagining a PNG editor dropping the Copyright chunk and keeping the License chunk. When humans alter the information, they are equally capable of altering any part of it regardless of how it might or might not be distributed across chunks. Cosmin replied: > png-list OR png-implement OR mng-list. You're both just making this up. :) The voting procedure was established by consensus in 1996-Sep: From: Glenn Randers-Pehrson ARL-WMRD-TED-TIB To: PNG List Date: Fri, 27 Sep 96 9:53:08 EDT Message-ID: <9609270953.aa01963@THOR.ARL.MIL> ... I believe we do have consensus, though, on the major parts of the concept: - 180 days since first submission for voter eligibility [in mpng-list I will suggest a shorter time like 90 days because the list hasn't been around so long] - 2-week discussion period - 2-week voting period - votes submitted publicly to png-list - [at least] 10 votes to approve - 2:1 YES:NO required to approve - rejected chunks not to be re-voted unless external conditions change, the proposal changes, or sufficent time [180 days?] has elapsed. The rest is formality and perhaps unnecessary. I have not even decided to vote YES on the process because I think the formality may actually be destructive; consensus on the above seems to me to be sufficent. Everyone went along with this, and development of the formal spec stopped; it was never approved, and is still available at: ftp://swrinde.nde.swri.edu/pub/png-group/documents/ png-registration-19960926.html In 1996-Oct a principle was established of using the unapproved formal spec to clarify the informal consensus summary. I wrote: > - [at least] 10 votes to approve As I recall, that meant 10 YES votes. 10 ABSTAIN votes doesn't cut it, even though the 2:1 YES:NO ratio is satisfied. :) And Glenn replied: Right. In case of doubt, look at the formal (unapproved) PNG chunk registration document. That's perfectly sensible, because Glenn wrote both the summary and the formal document, and because the document was the center of the discussion from which the consensus arose. The upshot is that the points listed in the summary, as clarified by the document, were agreed to by consensus (but any additional points contained in the document were not agreed to). The YES >= 10 threshold was changed in 1998 to YES - NO >= 5, at which time the voter eligibility requirements were discussed but not changed. The summary item "180 days since first submission" is unclear (submission to what?), so we turn to the document for clarification. The document explicitly restricts its attention to png-list. Votes are cast to png-list, and eligibility is determined by first post to png-list. When the document was written, png-announce, png-implement, and mpng-list all existed, so if they were meant to be included, they would have been. The practice of using multiple lists to determine voter eligibility originated in MNG votes. Glenn intended from the start to have separate standards for MNG voting (see the summary above). Only two PNG votes have mentioned png-implement: this one about the License keyword, and the previous one about the meaning of gamma=0 (back in 2001). I don't think there has been any consensus about using any list other than png-list for determining voter eligibility for PNG votes. I think the issue slipped by unnoticed in 2001. If we want to change the voter eligibility criteria for PNG votes, we'll need to reopen that discussion. Glenn Here is the proposal: File allow-long-text-lines-20040526.txt In the PNG specification, Clause 12.10, change the sentence Encoders should discourage the creation of single lines of text longer than 79 characters, in order to facilitate easy reading. to Encoders should discourage the creation of single lines of text longer than 79 characters, in order to facilitate easy reading, but should not strictly forbid words longer than that (to allow the inclusion of long URLs, for example). -- Send the message body "help" to png-list-request@ccrc.wustl.edu From owner-png-list@ccrc.wustl.edu Wed May 26 17:46:03 2004 Received: from viruswall2.ccf.swri.edu (viruswall2.ccf.swri.edu [129.162.252.35]) by swrinde.nde.swri.edu (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i4QMk31p028085 for ; Wed, 26 May 2004 17:46:03 -0500 (CDT) Received: from ccf.swri.edu (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by viruswall2.ccf.swri.edu (8.12.10/8.12.6) with ESMTP id i4QMk35x008666 for ; Wed, 26 May 2004 17:46:03 -0500 (CDT) Received: from ([129.162.1.33]) by ironmail.ccf.swri.edu with ESMTP ; Wed, 26 May 2004 17:45:31 -0500 Received: from ccrc.wustl.edu (dns.ccrc.wustl.edu [128.252.169.100]) by mailhub.ccf.swri.edu (8.12.10/8.12.6) with ESMTP id i4QMiswM025935; Wed, 26 May 2004 17:45:31 -0500 (CDT) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by ccrc.wustl.edu (8.11.6+Sun/8.11.6) id i4QMiFn08616; Wed, 26 May 2004 17:44:15 -0500 (CDT) X-Authentication-Warning: ccrc.wustl.edu: majordom set sender to owner-png-list@ccrc.wustl.edu using -f Received: from moutng.kundenserver.de (moutng.kundenserver.de [212.227.126.185]) by ccrc.wustl.edu (8.11.6+Sun/8.11.6) with ESMTP id i4QMiDp08612 for ; Wed, 26 May 2004 17:44:13 -0500 (CDT) Received: from [212.227.126.160] (helo=mrelayng.kundenserver.de) by moutng.kundenserver.de with esmtp (Exim 3.35 #1) id 1BT789-0004Ek-00 for png-list@ccrc.wustl.edu; Thu, 27 May 2004 00:44:13 +0200 Received: from [217.233.122.53] (helo=buddha.localdomain.de) by mrelayng.kundenserver.de with asmtp (Exim 3.35 #1) id 1BT789-00083B-00 for png-list@ccrc.wustl.edu; Thu, 27 May 2004 00:44:13 +0200 Date: Thu, 27 May 2004 00:44:13 +0200 From: Matthias Benkmann To: png-list@ccrc.wustl.edu Subject: Re: [png-list] CFV: "License" keyword 20040417 Message-Id: <20040527004413.07405dcf@buddha.localdomain.de> In-Reply-To: <3.0.6.32.20040526172853.01297d78@mail.comcast.net> References: <200404172123.i3HLNjAT019694@bolt.sonic.net> <3.0.6.32.20040526172853.01297d78@mail.comcast.net> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.9.8claws (GTK+ 1.2.10; i586-pc-linux-gnu) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Provags-ID: kundenserver.de abuse@kundenserver.de auth:95d11223a40b7ac6df081cef1fe1fef2 Sender: owner-png-list@ccrc.wustl.edu Precedence: bulk Reply-To: png-list@ccrc.wustl.edu On Wed, 26 May 2004 17:28:53 -0400 Glenn Randers-Pehrson wrote: > At 12:09 PM 5/12/2004 -0400, Glenn Randers-Pehrson wrote: > >CALL FOR VOTE > >"License" keyword 20040417 > >http://pmt.sourceforge.net/proposals > >proposed-license-keyword-20040417.txt > >glennrp@comcast.net > > > >License > > Either the full text license granted by the copyright holder > > or the title or abbreviated title of a published license, along > > with a URL pointing to it. It is relevant to this discussion because the licenses now require preservation of the author's URL, which could lead to the question about how to format long URLs in PNG text chunks. Note that this license potentially requires *two* URLs being preserved, namely the "license" URL and the author's URL, the latter being the one Greg proposed a long time ago with keyword "URL". If you distribute, publicly display, publicly perform, or publicly digitally perform the Work or any Derivative Works or Collective Works, You must keep intact all copyright notices for the Work and give the Original Author credit reasonable to the medium or means You are utilizing by conveying the name (or pseudonym if applicable) of the Original Author if supplied; the title of the Work if supplied; to the extent reasonably practicable, the Uniform Resource Identifier, if any, that Licensor specifies to be associated with the Work, unless such URI does not refer to the copyright notice or licensing information for the Work; and in the case of a Derivative Work, a credit identifying the use of the Work in the Derivative Work (e.g., "French translation of the Work by Original Author," or "Screenplay based on original Work by Original Author"). I don't like the proposal. It makes the whole issue even more complicated. I think the best solution is to simply eliminate the sentence completely. Where's the benefit in saying "Well, you should try to discourage the creation of long lines (although we don't give any recommendations as to what this "discouraging" should look like), but on the other hand sometimes long lines are justified, so you shouldn't be to hard on your users if they do create long lines." That's basically what the new sentence is saying in a less formal tone. This is just fuzzy blabla that is of no use to implementors. I say we should get rid of the sentence completely. The whole idea behind this recommendation is flawed. Can someone even come up with a useful implementation of this recommendation? What is this "discouraging" supposed to look like? A warning message "Your text contains a line with more than 79 characters. Do you really want to use this text?" ROTFL! My answer as a user would be "Of course I want to use this text. Why do you think I wrote it, you @#$%& program?" Who would put such a nuisance message box into a program that users would just click away? Furthermore, the 79 is a number of mainly historical interest. As PNG is a graphics file format, people are most likely to inspect PNG files in GUI-environments, not text consoles (which these days are often wider than 80 characters anyway). But my main argument is this: How does reformatting in the encoder (either automatic or by annoying the user into doing it) for a line length of 79 give better results than leaving this to the decoder, which knows the real line length of the display? I think there's no benefit, just drawbacks. Do you think that a recommendation to not create lines longer than 79 characters would be useful in the HTML recommendation? No, I'm sure you don't. So why is it useful here, in a context where presentation is much less important than on the web? If someone wants to pre-format his text, he can do so by inserting line breaks manually, but there's no benefit in encouraging this practice. Let's get rid of this sentence. The specs don't always have to grow more complex. Where *is* the description of "Copyright". All I can find in 1.2 is: Copyright Copyright notice at the head of 4.2.3 and repeated in section 4.3. If the reader of the spec wishes to know what the authors of the spec believed a "copyright notice" to be there is a fine example right at the end (headed by "Copyright Notice"!) That example *does* include a complete license (indirectly referring to an MIT license). The "Register of public PNG chunks and keywords, Version 1.2.0" back references 1.2. So far as I can see a reader of the specification will conclude that the appropriate place for a license is in the "Copyright" tEXt chunk, am I missing something?
