Subject: [*] AtariWriter Convert
An AtariWriter conversion utility in HyperCard. (snazzy title, no?)
This is a Macintosh HyperCard stack I wrote a while back to convert
AtariWriter documents into Rich Text Format (RTF) files which could be
imported into MS Word.
You'll need:
- A Macintosh (duh <g>). Any system that will run HyperCard will
work.
- HyperCard or HyperCard Player. I wrote this thing under HC2.1,
but I just ran it under HCPlayer 2.3 and everything seems to be
working fine.
How it works:
Run it by double clicking on it or opening it into HyperCard.
Click on the big 'Convert A File...' button. You'll see the standard
file selector box. Pick an atariwriter file.
Wait. Wait some more. Wait even longer. Wait an eternity.
The atariwriter file will be converted into a mishmash of {}s and
/pards in the scrollable field. Select the text in the field,
copy or cut it, and then paste it into a text/word processor.
Save this text. This step is necessary because the utility doesn't
output a file of its own. I'm a lazy programmer. :-)
Load the saved RTF file into your word processor of choice. You might
need to tell the word processor that the file is a Rich Text Format
document.
If you have a set of chained atariwriter files, you will need to
convert them one at a time. I made another version of this utility,
one that handles chained files, but alas it is nowhere to be found.
Also, due to the way RTF works, you can't just paste the RTF code
from the different chained files into one big text file, and then
load that into a word processor. You'll have to treat each one
seperately.

BANQUET MASTER is a full-featured, general purpose guest list organizer for
your next party (large or small), banquet, wedding, bar/bat mitzvah, Sweet
Sixteen, retirement party, etc.
BANQUET MASTER helps you figure out who you are going to invite by allowing
you to start with people in catagories such as DEFINITE, PROBABLE, and
MAYBE. Until you register, you will be limited to 10 Invitation Cards
(which can be used for 10 individuals, 10 couples or 10 families, or any
mixture of individuals, couples and families).
The names and addresses of potential guests can be typed in, or can be
imported from a return-delimited text file. BANQUET MASTER displays the
number of people in each catagory, so that you can keep a count as you move
people from one catagory to another (children and adults can be counted
separately). The list of the names and addresses of your final "definite"
guests can be printed and used by the person who is addressing the
invitations. Alternatively, the name and address list can be saved to disk
for use with a computerized addressing system (e.g., computerized
caligraphy). For more business-related uses, you can print to standard
address labels.
BANQUET MASTER keeps track of how many invitations you will need, who has
responded to the invitation, and who is actually attending.
If you are having a large affair where people are assigned to specific
tables, BANQUET MASTER has a "seating function" with a drag-and-drop
interface which makes the task of assigning tables very easy. The seating
list can then be printed and used by the person who is preparing the
placecards.

What does "Deskpop" do?
Deskpop is a Control Strip module which lists all volumes, folders and
files currently on the Mac's desktop. This is especially useful for the
(hopefully short) time the desktop is cluttered. Selecting an item from
the Deskpop menu will open it, selecting it and holding down the option
key before releasing the mouse will reveal it in the Finder. Folders are
displayed with the underline style. Volumes (a.k.a. Disks) are displayed
with the bold bold+underline style. The Trash is displayed with the bold
style.
Requirements
Requires Mac OS 7.1 or better, and scriptable Finder (which is integrated
into Mac OS 7.5 and better, I believe).

Subject: [*] EG&G/MCS file converter 1.1
This is a sci-tech related utility program to easily convert data files
from an EG&G multi-channel scaler to a mac text format which can be
opened in a spreadsheet.
The MCS format is supposed to be pretty general for spectrum files, but
I don't know what kinds of other programs generate them.
The program is a fat binary which automatically converts files which are
dropped onto its icon. It has been tested on various PowerMacs and 68k
desktop machines and a powerbook. Version 1.1 fixes a bug which caused
messed up X-values when converting several files at once.

Subject: [*] Flush It! 1.0
With the advent of System 7, large disk caches became a reality for
Macintosh users. Along with the enhanced performance the caches provided,
however, came the potential for data loss. If your system crashes before
the outgoing contents of your disk cache are actually written to disk,
any data contained in it will be lost. This includes data you may have
thought you saved.
Enter Flush It!.
Flush It! is a very small application (9K) that forces outgoing data
contained in the disk cache to be written to disk. Just put the Flush It!
application (or an alias to it) in your Apple Menu Items folder and,
whenever you feel the need to insure that your data has actually been
saved, select it from the Apple Menu. Flush It! will launch, force any
unsaved data from all of your mounted volumes to be written to disk, and
quit.
Flush It! has no user interface, since it's designed to perform just one
task.
Flush It! requires a PowerPC or 68020 (or better) CPU, and System 7.x or
Mac OS 8.
Flush It! is released as freeware, without any warranty whatsoever,
either express or implied. I retain all commercial rights to this
software. Flush It! may be included on CD-ROM, or in other types of
software compilations, as long as it is not sold individually and this
document is included with the distribution.

Font-o-rama! dramatically simplifies font selection. If you spend any
time at all scrolling through font menus, testing different font styles,
or trying to get just the right font size, then Font-o-rama! will save
you time.
It's a dialog box with a huge multi-column list area that's big enough
to display all your fonts at once. So you don't have to scroll through
a long font menu looking for "Garamond Ultra Italic." You just click on
it. Or type "Ga" to go directly to it.

For those who use more than one web browser (site designers, especially),
this script automates an otherwise tedious chore.
With a click, "Kill All Caches!" empties both your Netscape disk cache and
your Internet Explorer disk cache. In this way, you are always viewing
freshly updated files, rather than old ones.

Applescript, requires MacOS computers and System 7.5 or higher. May be

tool based on the Object Modeling Technique (OMT) notation but also

Subject: [*] PowerReplace 6.2.3; a text conversion utility
Announcing the release of PowerReplace 6.2.3! PowerReplace is a powerful
text conversion utility. It does the conversion using a small file called
"Filter". The syntax of filter is very easy to understand. PowerReplace is
also an utility to build text conversion application. It can create small
stand-alone daughter-application called "SelfReplace", who makes your
favorite conversion more easily and efficiently.
PowerReplace can replace character (including NULL, CR, LF, TAB) or string
by any other string. By use of the asterisk-sign(*) representing any
indeterminate string, it can replace also a string only whose two
extremities are known. It supports all character set, hexadecimal string
and regular expression(pattern) for find/replace.
New features (ver. 6.1 -> 6.2):
- Added Unanchor/Anchor Toolbar command in the Control menu.
- Added preferences for the window position, toolbar status, text font.
- Extract filter from SelfReplace using PowerReplace.
- protect filter by setting password in SelfReplace.
- Added author name and filter version number in filter information.

- Fixed the cursor color bug and the output text length bug.

RumorMill is a news (NNTP) server written by Jim Calvin, Jeremy Nelson and
Peter N Lewis. The News protocol is ideally suited to public discussion,
and RumorMill is designed to make it easy to create (and remove) local or
shared Newsgroups. RumorMill (and other NNTP) servers can easily be linked
together to create a wide spanning communication network.
RumorMill is ideal for business groups, schools, universities and any one
else who is interested in a simple, scalable and widely supported means of
providing group discussion. RumorMill can easily mix USENET newsgroups
with local or off-site newsgroups which can be selectively pulled or fed
from multiple servers.
RumorMill can be Remotely Administered, supports Newswatcher Prefs and
Newsrc files and it has a small memory footprint. Amongst other security
features RumorMill has Site Restrictions which can be used to prevent
off-site (based on TCP/IP address) computers accessing the server.
What's New?
Version 1.1 adds User Restrictions, support for Moderated Newsgroups and
support for Authenticated Newsfeeds.
User restrictions allow the administrator to set up user authentication on
their RumorMill Server. Users can be restricted to read-only on a user by
user basis. User authentication supplements Site Restriction Masks as a
way of controlling who has access to what.
RumorMill Setup adds support for creating moderated newsgroups. Support
for moderated newsgroups will be enhanced in later releases.
Finally, RumorMill now supports connecting to newsfeeds when authentication
is required. Handy for providing secure propogation of news from server to
server without the hassle of tracking changing IP numbers.
RumorMill requires Mac OS System 7.0 or later and is US$35 shareware. Site
and organisation-wide licenses are also available.

You must have the absolutely BRAND NEW version of the Apple Color
OneScanner software. I bought my scanner last summer (1996), same brand,
and it came with the Apple One Scanner Dispatcher scanning
software--which works perfectly under OS 8, including its plug-in for
Photoshop.....

Maybe a very small extension called "SoftScreen" could do the work. It
was published for Farallon to address a Timbuktu problem with certain Mac
models. I had a problem with a 6400/200 which I wanted to use as a headless
server and the startup process became stopped when no monitor was
attached, and this really small extension (770 bytes) solved my trouble. I
don't use Timbuktu at all, but SoftScreen does its job anyway. It can be
found at the Info-Mac archives, look at
<info-mac/comm/atlk/timbuktu-soft-screen-ext.hqx>.

Hit Command F, which will bring up your 'find' box. Now option-click on
the 'name' slot within that find box to generate a pop-up menu that
includes "visibility" near the bottom. Selecting "visibility" makes the
word "invisible" appear in the slot over the find button. Hit the find
button, and your invisible files are listed for you.
You may need to give your 'find' file more memory to see all your
invisibles.

I can't see any advantage in doing so. Both ROM and RAM are hardware
with only the difference of the RAM being re-writable, while the ROM
contents can not be changed. So I think it wouldn't improve anything.

You can find a plug-in called Onescan 1.1.1 at

It does work under 7.6.1 with my Apple OneScanner, but I've purchased a new
scanner and haven't tried it under OS8.
The other scanner files (extensions) I've used are at Apple's site...

You use something like ResEdit, FIleBuddy, or Snitch; something that lets
you manipulate the Finder Flags on an arbitrary file.
With ResEdit, select "Get File/FOlder Info..." and select your invisible
file; in the info window toggle the "invisible" checkbox. The other tools
work in a similar manner.

Apple caught this one last week, it's now a known issue. Thier workaround
is to use the disk tools image from the CD to boot the machine once you've
made the diskette OR boot with extensions off for some machines. The bus
error seems to happen reliably on any 5xxx/6xxx that needs the REA logic
board replacement done.
My copy of the CD actually booted my 7100/80AV and a 6100 successfully,
--with extensions off only on the 7100, if I remember correctly--. Since
then it has thrown sad mac codes onto the screen of my partner's 631 (The
look on her face was NOT encouraging), but we'll apply the shift key method
to that one soon and see if that helps.
I'll also cross my fingers that Apple will be fixing this problem &
replacing this defective crop of CDs. People are shelling out $120 for
something that won't even boot thier machine without extra effort that some
of them are not willing to go through. It certainly frustrates me, and I
will, no doubt, have to install this system at least 20 times in the coming
60 days, on as many different CPUs.

The problem is that the StyleWriter 2500 installer is too smart for its (or
your) own good. The Thread Manager was incorporated into the System prior
to the arrival of the QuickTime MPEG extension. However, a newer version
of the Thread Manager was needed, and was thus included with the QuickTime
MPEG installer (you had it then). But the StyleWriter installer doesn't
know that, and "does you a favor" by removing the Thread Manager. I've
been there and done that myself.
You have two solutions:
(1) If you have a backup of your System folder, copy the missing file(s) back,
or
(2) Simply re-install the QuickTime MPEG extension.

Go to Apple's ftp.site and download the updated Quicktime MPEG version
1.0.1 which instals the Thread Manager extension too.HTH.
