periodically or every time it is run.

Cache Killer Pro retains everything that made the original Cache Killer so
popular and incorporates powerful new features to make your browser cache
management easier than ever before!

- automatically detect the individual cache folders created by Netscape
Communicator

Hi!
I am running 7.5.5 on a 7300 which is connected to 3 printers, a Texas
Instruments microlaser 600 locally, and a Laserwriter Pro and HP LaserJet 5M
through the local net. As I seemed to get conflicts between the drivers when I
loaded the HP and TI drivers, I use only Laserwriter 8.3.4 for all the printers.
This seems to work fine on all three printers, with one exception. It will print
italic on the microlaser 600, but italic comes out as plain text on both the Apple
printer and the Hewlett Packard printer. What should I do to get italic to print on
all three printers: any suggestions? Mike

Subject: (Q) Applevision 1710 & 5300cs problems

I have a powerbook 5300cs/24/750 which I hook up to my 1710 monitor to do
work at night or at least I did until a few days ago.

I recently upgraded to system 8 and for a few days everything worked great.
I would connect my Mac to the monitor start it up from the external key
board and then change the resolution to 832X600 @ 75 Hz (or something like
that) and work away.

Last weekend I set up the external CD drive and turned it over to my kids.
I set the monitor back to the lower res (600X480@67Hz) so they could see
better. There was a little goofing around with the front buttons that
change the color temperature but nothing that hasn't happened before.

So when the kids were done I switched the resolution back to where I work
and rebooted to disconnect the CD drive. The screen came up and just after
the voice recognition icon loaded the screen went dark. Okay so this has
happened before so I touch the monitor settings buttons to bring up the
menu's-nothing happened.

So after several nights of playing with it the only way I can get the
monitor to come up is to reboot with the monitor disconnected, put the Mac
to sleep, then plug the monitor in and wake it up. Then I can touch the
left side monitor buttons move it to tools and change the temperature down
to 7500. I have one choice of resolution and if I restart the Mac I lose
the monitor and the only way I can get back the monitor is to reboot (Is
there a way to put a Mac to sleep using a the keyboard?).

Okay, so here is what I have done.

1. downloaded the new Applevision software (1.5.3) installed with
extensions off.

2. Turned off all non system 8 extensions-screen still goes dark just
before finder loads

3. Turned off as many system 8 extensions as I could.

4. Turned on video monitoring and booted with both monitors. Touching the
monitor's buttons brings up the monitors control panel. Left buttons do
nothing. Brightness and contrast buttons do bring up a scale but only on
the powerbook monitor. Notice and AV monitor window behind the monitor's
and sound control panel- brought it to the front. No color temperature
option and no effect on it when using the monitor buttons.

5. Most have done something -now the 'hide cursor on this monitor' button
is checked so I do not have a cursor on powerbook screen and I can not see
it on the other screen. Only way around this is to reboot with the 1710
unplugged and then put it to sleep and then plug it in and wake up the Mac.

6. Tried zapping the pram

7. Tried throwing all the preference files that pertained to the monitor
away (monitors and sound, Applevision, colorsync)

8. Called apple SOS. The put me on hold for about 40 minutes while they
tried to find an answer and came back with nothing. I have a case number
and they will try to have some answers for me tomorrow when I call.

If anyone has any suggestions before I call them back I am all ears. I am
sure there is something simple I am missing. I really thing that my
monitor is working fine. I suspect that it is something with System 8 and
the Applevision software but I do not want to have to go back to system
7.6.1 to test this.

I successfully use Eudora Light 3.11 filters to transfer mail to various
mailboxes, using header information such as <From:>, but I have been unable
to transfer mail based on subjects which start with a specified character
string.

For example: I subscribe to the EvangeList, and want to transfer all
messages whose subjects start with "!!" (the EvangeList code for "action
required") or with "Job" (the code for "employment opportunity") to a
specific mailbox. [Actually, I'd like to transfer them to the Trash, but
I'll settle for a specific mailbox. Once there, I can delete these messages
with "Select All." :-) ]

I have created a filter with

<Match:> Incoming and Manual messages whose <Header: Subject:> <starts
with> <Job>

 and

<Actions:> <Transfer To> <mailbox_name>

without success.

If you have a suggestion, please reply to me privately at

Thank you.

I'd suggest putting a shorter expiry on the kaleidoscope schemes

uploaded to the gui/ks directory before mid-March '97 is incompatible
with the Kaleidoscope 1.5 format used by the current Kaleidoscope

Subject: GIFs and JPEGs not visible in Netscape

Hi,

I have built a fairly large project in html. It contains both jpeg and gif
files. When I send the html files and the images as file attachments in
Eudora emails all works well at the other end: the recipient can display
pages normally, in Netscape or IE, on a mac or a pc or whatever else. I
have also uploaded the entire project with Anarchie to other people's
accounts and that too worked hunky dory.

But...

As the number of files keeps growing (over 450 so far), I thougth of
putting everything in one (or a few) large files and place them on a ftp
server for people to access and download. So I ziped everything together
with Zipit. And now when a non-Mac recipient opens the files, the html is
displayed correctly, but the images are illegible. One guy has found out
that there is some "garbage" in each file, probably some mac-specific
stuff. He can repair the files by opening them in Paint Shop Pro, and
saving it without making any change.

But this means making this over 400 times. :(

I have tried to move my files to a dos floppy and zipping them from there.
No luck. Is there anything I can do to make sure the extraneous info is
removed?

From: Graeme Forbes <forbes@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu>
Subject: MacOS8: a jaundiced view

My own reaction to OS8 is less positive than Brett's. Running on a 604e/200
PowerTower Pro I don't find the new Finder any snappier than 7.6.1's and
since I rarely want to do lots of different things in the Finder
simultaneously, multi-threading is lost on me (tho' I agree that it's great
for those who can use it). I found System 7.6.1 extremely stable. OS8 is
about the same in my experience so far.

The big drawback is the number of control panels and extensions which
break. The three single biggest productivity boosters in my 7.6.1 set-up
are PopUpFolder, Super Boomerang, and Double-Scroll. All three are gone
under OS8. Ed Voas tells me he's working on an OS8-compatible
Double-Scroll, and I'll be glad to see it released. Now Utilities has
posted a message on its website advising against installing NU under OS8
and indicates that it may not bother updating the utilities - they say
they're working on group scheduling software and when they're done with
that they'll think about it.

The loss of PopUpFolder is a disaster, as far as I'm concerned. Rather than
just buy the utility from the Belgian company Inline sold it to, Apple has
created its own "spring-loaded" folders. They are better than nothing, but
as a Finder navigation enhancement they have only a small part of PUF's
functionality, and the actual mechanics of digging thro folders is much
more awkward and clumsy than in PUF. The Belgian company is currently
evaluating the possibility of upgrading PUF. If you want them to, contact
the American distributors, http://www2.asdsoft.com/asdsoft/, and you'll get
a message that contains the Belgian address you can write to. Sorry, I
discarded my copy after writing to request an upgrade.

Another minor irritation is that the Resedit fmnu templates that worked for
System 7 don't work in 8. Jonathan Jacobs has posted his "8.0 mods" which
among other things restores command-t for emptying the trash, but it's not
the same as having editable menus. Why does Apple force us to jump thro'
these stupid hoops when it would be trivial to allow users to customize
their keyboard shortcuts?

To me the most amazing things about the OS8 interface are (i) users of
large monitors still don't get *built-in* double-arrows for scrolling. So
we have to do ten times as much mousing as should be required, while waiting
for Ed to rescue us. This is an elementary point about the user interface
that you don't need 15 years to absorb. And (ii) OS8 got out the door with
the truly horrible Charcoal as the default system font. Makes me wonder if
anyone is in charge. You can switch back to Chicago but it's just
screamingly obvious that espi should have been the default. It isn't even
an option! Fortunately, Evert-Jan Nijhof (e.j.nijhof@fys.ruu.nl) has posted
a Resedit fix.

The multi-threaded Finder and whatever bug fixes there are apart, OS8 is
mainly attractive for its cosmetic aspects and its implementation of some
interface enhancements which try to catch up with what commercial,
shareware and freeware authors already provided. System 7.6.1 with the
Aaron look and running those commercial, shareware and freeware products
is, in my opinion, superior. I installed OS8 on an empty partition I keep
for experimenting with new software I don't want to overwrite old versions
with. That makes it very easy to go back to 7.6.1, which I will happily do.

OK, first, you can get an extension from Apple called "Remote Only". This
allows you to turn on AppleTalk in a mode that doesn't affect your serial
ports. You put this in your extensions folder, then in the Network (under
classic) or the AppleTalk (under OT) control panel, select Remote only
instead of your printer port.

>The only thing I did not do, which was part of the instruction set, was to
>configure Internet Config, the reason being I have several dial-up
>accounts. I can't believe that was a necessary step.

It's a necessary step in a whole lot of Internet applications. I have at
least 6 apps that won't run without IC & about 7 more that recommend it &
package it with the installer. There are utilities that make it easy to set
up and switch between many different sets of preferences in Internet Config.

>Has anyone else had this problem? Could someone tell me perhaps what I
>did wrong and why the html documents were being served up in their source,
>and what I need to do?

Yes, it's because of Internet Config. The purpose for using it is so that
it knows what kind of documents it is serving. IC tells NetPresenz what
.html and the other file extensions mean. This is necessary instead of
scanning for HTML tags because if you did that, then you'd have a hard time
putting a page on the web that shows HTML tags (because they'd be USED
instead of SHOWN)

I hope this

Subject: OS 8

Hi newbie MicroSerfs :-(

First I heard that OS 8 needs 12 Mb machine ram to install, then that
virtual memory has been improved so much on OS 8 that it will run up to 20
Mb with no trouble. The truth is out there, anybody like to share it with
me? We don't even have OS 8 in the UK yet, but I would like to be ready for
it. Or maybe I should buy a PC, not.

Keep the faith kids,

Ian Burt

Subject: Printing Word 5.1 selected pages

I am one of those people insisting on continuing to use version 5.1 of
MS Word. In documents containing several sections, each with its own
page numbers, I used to be able to print selected pages from selected
sections, say, page 2 and 3 from Section 4. Since switching printer
software to LaserWriter 8.4, I can no longer make such a selection. I
can still select an entire section for printing, but I can no longer
select a specified range of pages from a specified section, unless I
tediously add up the pages in all the preceding sections, and use the
General print option at least I THINK that would work).

I finally switched back to LaserWriter 8.2 (without DeskTop Printing),
but I am wondering whether or not I overlooked an option hidden
somewhere. (Don't bother advising me to downgrade to Word 6 -- I won't).
