This is a self-extracting .exe as a rare exception since it is a
compression utility. We usually only take zipped files. I am also
a bit baffled by the defautl extension. The Unix version uses .gz
(after much discussion in comp.compression) but the MsDos version
still uses .z ad the default.

Wed 2-Jun-93: I am afraid I have to cease publishing the annotated
monthly Garbo download statistics. It was based on approximate
sampling at 20 minute intervals. The Garbo activities have become
about five-fold since the introduction of the counter script. The
script cannot keep up with this development any more. The results
are too much off the true figures to be of interest. Hence the
discontinuation.
The weekly Gorbo download statistics will naturally continue. It
is based on the FTP log, and that is accurate.

I like these new features. Since .zip is so prominent it is very
judicious to do the multiple choice for .zip to see if the new PKZIP
2.04 will stabilize. For example I use 2.04G for extracting, but
continue to use 1.10 for making .zip files for a little bit longer,
although sooner or later I'll update both my own and Garbo's PKZIP
usage, not just the PKUNZIP usage.
The number of archivers is increasing. The new SQZ support
partly covers this aspect. HPACK is still not covered, but I'll
draw Jim's kind attention to it, too. The problem with HPACK is
that it is very slow.
If you have been skipping some of the SHEZ updates, I suggest
taking this one now.

Sat 20-Feb-93: We are making the following arrangements at Garbo for
the time being to economize on Garbo moderators' workload. The main
Garbo upload queue backlog will now gradually be resolved without
making the customary upload announcements at all. My apologies to
our gentle uploaders for any inconvenience caused. (But, naturally,
you have a free choice of posting the announcement yourself when the
file becomes available). You can see the log of the names of the
files as they become available from Garbo for example by watching
the /pc/_files.in list of the current month's uploads.
Also Timo's part of the MsDos queue is currently running on a low
profile and tempo. Selected information is available as
/pc/pd2/news-pd2 and /pc/ts/0news-ts.
I do not have the information to give when exactly we expect
Garbo arrangements can go back to normal.
Sat 20-Feb-93: SIMTEL20 recently announced cdf40d.zip which I have
now obtained also to Garbo using the following description after
taking a closer look. I also obtained a few other files from
SIMTEL20 and made the following quick observations.

The are several good 1-pass floppy copiers around,
but if I would have to opt to one of them this would
be it. It has an interface very familiar to the
older versions of the Turbo Pascal IDE, and has some
nice features like being able to format, and being
able not to waste time on the empty part of the
floppy. It is a typical example how to to write a
program with a professional touch.

Fri 8-Jan-93: I have updated my list of the email addresses of the
PD & shareware MsDos authors. The list is now availabe from us as

The list now contains 89 authors including an updated email address
for PKWARE.
The number of the authors on the list has been steadily growing,
but not quite at the rate I had hoped for. The problem, you see, is
that the users of the MsDos FTP archives often wish to contact the
authors, and it would be nice to have up-to-date information in one
place in a fairly standard format.
If you are an author who wishes to be included, please see the
ready fill-in format at the end of the author list.
Fri 8-Jan-93: Rhys Weatherley and I have updated our list of MsDos
FTP sites and the otehr related information. There is one addition,
a Taiwanese MsDos and Windows FTP site. Also I have added a
contents list (given below). The updated file is

Thu 7-Jan-93: Got PKZIP 2.04C compatible Info-ZIP MsDos temporary
unzip (/pc/arcers/unz50u1.exe) from Jean-loup Gailly. Jean-loup is
part of the Info-ZIP team, and he also is the person who publishes
the comp.compression FAQ (/pc/doc-net/faqc*.zip).
Thu 7-Jan-93: I imported the new PKZIP 2.04 (/pc/arcers/pkz204c.exe)
yesterday. In 24 hours it was downloaded about 800 times, which
tangents an oln scan*.zip record. The sorry side of things is that
there seems to be an inordinate number of irritating bugs in the
otherwise fine product. The users have reposrted many of the in the
comp.compression UseNet newsgroup, and even I found two clar bugs
all by myself.
Wed 6-Jan-93: Since many readers may have been on holidays during
the time, I would like to announce the stored version of a recent
posting of mine. Just like for 1991 I wrote for 1992 a kind of a
subjective look back at the year from an archive site maintainer's,
a newsgroup co-moderator's and cbip discussion subgroups (and later
cam.d) reader's point of view. This brief history is available as

Mon 4-Jan-93: Rhys Weatherley and I have updated our list of MsDos

We updated the archie server information, and added information
about SIMTEL20 mail server (trickle) contact addresses. We
discarded the auxiliary chapman.txt file about archie servers,
since it began to be out of date.
