The Cornell CU-SeeMe Consortium
Membership FAQ
January 1996
What is the CU-SeeMe Consortium?
The Cornell CU-SeeMe Consortium is an international strategic alliance between universities, corporations, and government agencies. Its mission is the development and distribution of widespread video communication on the Internet and the facilitation of the user experience using this technology.
Why should my organization join?
If your company or university believes that its future is based on or has already been influenced by the explosive growth of the Internet or by what the politicians call the Information Superhighway, then you've given yourself the best reason to join. Your future may depend on it.
We believe that video communication is the next growth application to impact the Internet. The acceptance of CU-SeeMe worldwide in the areas of education and entertainment to name just a couple is nothing short of a phenomenon.
By joining the Consortium, you position your organization to help assure that the phenomenon continues to follow the university model - quality software available at no cost to the user. Our model eliminates one of the greatest barriers to change - cost - so that end users can experiment and learn how to best use this new technology in their own environment.
Helping the world is great, but what does MY organization get?
We proudly list all our consortium members on the Cornell CU-SeeMe Home Page with pointers to your site to highlight your own endeavors with video communication. Through your comments and discussions with Consortium and project staff, we get many ideas for new features and improvements to the code as well as new areas of effort for the Consortium.
As a member of the CU-SeeMe Consortium, you can send folks to Consortium events such as Technical Briefings and other activities that give you a chance to talk face to face with the Cornell and other developers. In addition, questions from Consortium members are given first priority.
You will have the opportunity to develop partnerships with other consortium members and with Cornell, while we build a developers forum together. You will have early access to all our documentation and software, so if you hold a source license, you'll see the new versions before anyone else.
Do I get source code by becoming a member?
The licensing of the source code is separate from Consortium membership. In other words, you can get a source license without being a Consortium member. Remember though that as a Consortium member, you will receive benefits that Òplain oleÓ licensees will not.
How can I participate?
Any organization in any country is welcome to join. We encourage licensees and users to become members. After all, through the Consortium activities, you get the best information we can provide on the project and you also receive the visibility that all our supporters deserve. An organization may sign a Consortium agreement or (if the concept of "membership" is a problem) provide partial funding of the 1996-1998 CU-SeeMe Consortium Proposal.
How much does it cost?
The minimum levels of support are:
- Associate U.S. $25,000
- Affiliate U.S. $15,000
- Contributor (Non-Profit or Startup) U.S. $ 5,000
While an individual membership is not offered at this time, one is under consideration.
