04/01/02 ****Vector Linux 2.5 final release**** Starting with VL-2.5 there is now a base console system (veclinux.bz2) complete with compiler and network capabilities. The Xfree gui is now an option. You can choose between vers-3.3.6 or vers-4.2 depending on your hardware capabilities. Version 4.2 is intended for pentium 200 + machines with good video hardware. The 3.3.6 version is for 386/486 early pentium systems with limited (under 4 megs) video ram capabilities. To install simply download the base system to a partition and place it in a top level veclinux directory. Choose the XFree system that you would like to install and copy that to the veclinux directory. There are four kernel choices, pentide.bz2, pentscsi.bz2, i386ide.bz2 and i386pent.bz2. The pent kernels are pentium optimized choose either the scsi or ide version. The scsi version has basic ide support so this is the one to use if you have a mix of controllers on your system. The same holds true for the i386 kernels only these are for i386/486 machines. Again choose the right kernel package for your system and download then place in the veclinux directory. Download and make the root and boot images to floppies either via dd with linux or rawrite for the dos/win platform. If you don't have rawrite.exe on your win/dos system then you can get it from the top level dostools directory. You will need the root.img and one of four boot images. The boot images are categorized the same as the kernels explained earlier in this text. These are found in the disks directory. Use the boot floppy to start and when asked insert the root disk when prompted. Have fun !! Vec7
