Awhois v 1.0.0.1
© 2002 by Winfried Weide
"AWhois" simply stands for "another whois".It is a simple whois-client that establishes a TCP connection to any of the servers supplied by the application.
It supports servers which comply with the RFC 954 rules.
Currently the application supports 230 servers all over the world:
.com 20 servers
.edu 50 servers
.gov 16 servers
.org 1 server
.net 25 servers
.mil 2 servers
.ac - .za 116 servers
Simply unzip the "awhois.zip" into a directory of your choice. Please note that "wers.dll" and "wserv.dll" must reside in the same directory where the application("awhois.exe") is installed.
In order to make the program run you need at least a 386 CPU, 8 MB RAM ,a mouse and of course a modem and an internetaccount.
As operating system at least Windows 95 or WindowsNT 3.51 is required. You also need to have Winsock 2.0 installed on your system.A screenresolution of at least 800x600 is recommended. Please note that the program was tested only on Win98SE.
Step1: Entering query
Enter a domainname
in the "Query" -box.You can also enter a mailbox as the picture below shows
Step2: Selecting server
Select
which servers you want to have listedStep3: Connecting
Doubleclick the server
you wish to proceed your queryStep4: Saving
If you want to save the entire result just
rightclick and select "Save".If you want to save only a part of the result, select the desired part by marking it with the left mouse button, then click right and select "Save".
When you select a file for saving that is not empty, all data will be appended to the end,so no data of an existing file will be lost.
The connection timeout
is by default set to 20 seconds. You can change this by entering the desired timeout in the "Timeout"box. It accepts values between 15 and 180 seconds. Please be careful with this! If you have a slow connection you should leave it at 20 secs. or may increase it a littlebit. If the timeout is set too short it might happen that the result gets cut off.In case of a timeout you will get a message like "Interupted function call - User configured connection timeout".Just click ok and try again.
You can switch the tooltips on and off by checking/unchecking the "
Tooltips" checkbox. The servers supplied by the program are NOT ALL available servers.I only included servers which comply with the RFC 954 rules(so I did not include Rwhois servers as there are only a few of them.).Please be aware that there are some servers in the database which are not accessible to the public (most of them are ".edu" - servers. If your IP tells them that you are not allowed to access the server you will get a message like "connection refused" this is NOT A MALFUNCTION OF THE PROGRAM. "uchicago.edu" is an example for this. Please also note that not every domain is registered with every server. You have to try out.If you would like to lookup foo.fr ,e.g you might be successful in choosing "whois.nic.fr" to process your query. If you want to lookup foo.com you might be sucessful in trying out "whois.nic.com" or "rs.internic.net".
If you get an errormessage like "Connection timed out" you should try again later.
Be aware that not every server allows mailbox lookups or user lookups(@navy.mil , xxx@, e.g).
If you get an errormessage like "Host not found" please check if you are connected to the internet. If you are not ,the program of course will not be able to find a server. If you are connected and get this message, the server obviously does not exist any more.In this case please
e-mail me that I can remove it from the database and keep the program up to date.If you know about other whois servers not yet supplied by my program please also let me know.If you know about new whois servers,or want to inform me of servers that do not longer exist please
email me that I can keep the program up to date. For updates please visit
